About

My name is Bryan Johnston and I created this blog as an outlet to publish my thoughts regarding education and the Northgate School District.

In January 2013, the Northgate school board approved the superintendent’s proposal to furlough 23 teachers and 10 teacher aides. They did so after listening to hours of community opposition, citing a decline in enrollment over the past 18 years. The news of the impending furloughs had only been announced less than a week before the meeting, and the swiftness of the decision as well as a lack of evidence alarmed me.

This event helped bring to my attention the financial struggles affecting Northgate as well as many other schools across the state of Pennsylvania. Since then I have been trying to learn as much as possible about the issues affecting our schools and how I can help make a difference. I hope that I can use this blog to help share the information that I gather.
